The Chemical Evolution of Galaxies by Successive Starbursts
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose an evolutionary scenario by successive bursts of star formation to reproduce the chemical properties of massive nearby Starburst Nucleus Galaxies (SBNGs). The N/O abundance ratios in SBNGs are ∼ 0.2 dex higher than in normal H II regions observed in the disks of late–type spirals. The variation of the N/O ratio as a function of metallicity follows a primary+secondary relation, but the increase of nitrogen does not appear as a continuous process. Assuming that nitrogen is produced by intermediate-mass stars, we show that our observations are consistent with a model where the bulk of nitrogen in SBNGs was formed during past sequences of bursts of star formation which probably started 2 or 3 Gyrs in the past.

Starbursts: Lessons for the Origin and Evolution of Galaxies and the Inter-Galactic Medium
Starbursts are episodes of intense star-formation that occur in the central regions of galaxies, and dominate the integrated emission from the galaxy. They are a significant component of the presentday universe, being the site of ∼ 25% of the high-mass starformation. They offer unique ‘laboratories’ for testing our ideas about star-formation, the evolution of high-mass stars, and the physics of...
متن کاملProto–Galactic Starbursts at High Redshift
We have computed the evolving ultraviolet-millimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by proto-galactic starbursts at high redshift, incorporating the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium in a consistent manner. Dust extinction is calculated in a novel way, that is not based on empirical calibrations of extinction curves, but rather on the lifetime of molecular clouds which ...
متن کاملStarbursts in the Far - Ultraviolet
Starbursts are a significant component of the present-day universe, and offer unique laboratories for studying the processes that have regulated the formation and evolution of galaxies and the intergalactic medium. The combination of large aperture size, medium-to-high spectral resolution, and access to the feature-rich far-ultraviolet band make FUSE a uniquely valuable tool for studying starbu...
متن کاملThe Role of Starbursts in the Formation of Galaxies & Active Galactic Nuclei
Starbursts are episodes of intense star-formation in the central regions of galaxies, and are the sites of roughly 25% of the high-mass star-formation in the local universe. In this contribution I review the role starbursts play in the formation and evolution of galaxies, the intergalactic medium, and active galactic nuclei. First, I point out the empirical similarities between local starbursts...
متن کاملStarburst in multiple galaxy mergers
We numerically investigate stellar and gaseous dynamical evolution of mergers between five identical late-type disk galaxies with the special emphasis on star formation history and chemical evolution of multiple galaxy mergers. We found that multiple encounter and merging can trigger repetitive massive starbursts (typically ∼ 100 M yr−1) owing to the strong tidal disturbance and the resultant g...
